How do I fit a running martingale?
When fitted, a running martingale should still allow the rider to give freedom in the reins if the horse trips or needs full use of its head and neck to balance themselves. It is essential that the martingale is not fitted too tightly, especially where being used for jumping.
To fit a running martingale, place the neckstrap around the horse's neck, with one hand's width between the strap and the horse. Pass the girth through the loop in the martingale and fasten. The rings of the martingale should then be adjusted to reach the horse's withers.
If the rings are too short, the martingale will come into action when it is not needed (it should never act on the reins when the horse's head is in the normal position). Pass the reins through the rings of the martingale. Martingale stops can be used on the reins to prevent the rings sliding up and catching the bit.
If in doubt, we would always advise you seek the advice of a qualified riding instructor or similar person.
